SOAR INTO 5TH
GRADE
BY
STAYING SHARP THIS SUMMER
Dear
Parents,
Your child has worked very hard all
year and is leaving school this year as a better reader, writer and overall
stronger student. As you know, good
readers and writers read and write continually.
The more students read, the more proficient they become. Summer is a great time of year for students
to read books for pleasure. Attached is
the summer reading list for Grade 5. Each
incoming 5th grader is responsible for reading two books over the
summer and completing the attached graphic organizer for each book.
In addition, summer is an ideal time
to keep your child’s recall of basic math facts sharp. Studies show that students forget much of
what they learned the previous school year over the summer months. By coming to
school in September with strong and accurate recall of addition, subtraction,
multiplication and division facts, your child will be confident when presented
with new material. This is why the 5th
grade team feels strongly that students should continue to practice their math
facts at least 10 minutes, five days a week over the summer recess. Attached, you will find a calendar to record
your child’s accomplishments this summer. You may use the Shatekon Library
Media Center, fifth grade, Reflex Math link, (license expires in October, 2015),
flashcards or any other creative solutions.
The point being, ten minutes each day is worth hours of future
struggles.
Please
bring in the graphic organizers and summer math practice calendars to your new
(5th grade) teacher on the first day of school. Thank you for your
support and have a great summer!
We look forward to a wonderful year,
Shatekon
